CHAPTER - 3

The air in the Singhania Industries boardroom crackled with anticipation. Saaransh Singhania, usually a picture of relaxed confidence in his own domain, felt a knot of nervous energy tighten in his stomach. Today was the day he officially met Samaira Birla, the woman his family, and hers, envisioned as his future wife.
He smoothed down the lapel of his perfectly tailored suit, a gesture he knew was futile but somehow helped to ground him. He'd seen her picture, of course, a professionally taken portrait that hinted at intelligence and grace. But it hadn't prepared him for the reality.
The doors opened, and Samaira Birla walked in.
She was breathtaking. Her dark hair was pulled back in a sleek ponytail, highlighting high cheekbones and eyes that seemed to hold a universe of thoughts. She wore a simple, elegant saree in a muted shade of grey, a stark contrast to the vibrant colours favoured by most women in his family. It spoke of understated power, of someone comfortable in her own skin.
Saaransh rose to greet her, his carefully rehearsed words momentarily forgotten. "Ms. Birla, welcome. It's a pleasure to finally meet you."
"Mr. Singhania," she replied, her voice cool and composed, a perfect counterpoint to his slightly flustered greeting. "The pleasure is all mine."
He extended his hand, and her touch was fleeting, almost hesitant. Even that brief contact sent a jolt through him. He found himself inexplicably drawn to her, captivated by her beauty and the aura of quiet strength that surrounded her.
The meeting commenced, a carefully choreographed dance of pleasantries and polite inquiries. Their fathers, old friends and seasoned businessmen, steered the conversation, outlining the potential benefits of a closer alliance between their families. Saaransh listened attentively, contributing when necessary, but his gaze kept drifting back to Samaira.
He noticed the way she held herself, ramrod straight, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. He saw the subtle tension in her jaw, the almost imperceptible tightening of her lips when the conversation veered towards the topic of marriage. It was clear she was uncomfortable, a fact that both intrigued and worried him.
"Samaira has been instrumental in expanding Birla Enterprises into new markets," her father, Mr. Vikram Birla, said proudly. "She has a keen business mind."
Saaransh nodded, genuinely impressed. "Indeed. I've been following Birla Enterprise's progress with great interest. Your strategies have been particularly innovative, Ms. Birla."
Samaira offered a small, polite smile. "Thank you, Mr. Singhania. It's a team effort, of course."
He wanted to delve deeper, to ask her about her vision, her challenges, her passions. But the formality of the situation, the weight of expectation, held him back. He was acutely aware that this wasn't just a business meeting; it was an audition, a prelude to a potential life together.
As the discussion shifted to more personal matters, Saaransh tried to engage her directly. "So, Ms. Birla, what are your interests outside of the business world?"
She hesitated for a moment, her eyes flicking towards her father before returning to meet Saaransh's gaze. "I enjoy travelling," she said, her voice carefully neutral. "Exploring different cultures, experiencing new things."
"That's wonderful," Saaransh replied, genuinely pleased to find a common ground. "I've always been fascinated by history. I try to visit historical sites whenever I get the chance."
He wanted to ask her where she had travelled, what she had seen, what she had felt. He wanted to hear the passion in her voice, to glimpse the real woman behind the carefully constructed facade. But her answers remained brief, almost guarded.
He noticed a subtle shift in her demeanour when her phone buzzed on the table beside her. She glanced at the screen, a flicker of something that looked like longing crossing her face before she quickly composed herself. The name 'Rohit' flashed across the screen for a brief second as her finger hovered over the notification.
He tried to ignore the pang of something akin to jealousy that pricked at him. Who was Rohit? A colleague? A friend? Or something more?
Later, during a brief lull in the conversation, he saw Samaira surreptitiously glance at her phone again. This time, she didn't even bother to hide the small, almost imperceptible smile that touched her lips. It was a genuine smile, unlike the polite, rehearsed ones she had offered him throughout the meeting. It was a smile that hinted at a different side of her, a side that was warm, unguarded, and perhaps, deeply in love.
The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow. Samaira Birla wasn't just uncomfortable; she was committed to someone else. And that someone was Rohit.
He watched her as she excused herself to take the call, her voice softening as she spoke, her body subtly relaxing. He couldn't hear the words, but he could see the emotions playing on her face – affection, joy, and something that looked suspiciously like defiance.
He felt a wave of disappointment wash over him. He had been so captivated by her beauty and intelligence, so drawn to the challenge of unraveling her carefully constructed persona, that he had failed to see the obvious. Samaira Birla was already spoken for, at least in her heart.
When she returned, her cheeks were flushed, and her eyes held a newfound sparkle. She seemed more animated, more alive than she had been all morning. The tension that had been clinging to her like a second skin seemed to have eased, replaced by a quiet determination.
Saaransh knew then that he had a decision to make. He could pursue this alliance, knowing that Samaira's heart belonged to another. He could try to win her over, to convince her that he was the better choice. But the thought of forcing himself into her life, of being a constant reminder of her obligations, made him uneasy.
He believed in love, in genuine connection, in the kind of relationship that was built on mutual respect and affection. And he couldn't imagine building that with someone who was already in love with someone else.
As the meeting drew to a close, Saaransh made a subtle shift in his approach. He steered the conversation away from the topic of marriage, focusing instead on the potential business collaborations between their companies. He treated Samaira with the same respect and professionalism he would afford any other business partner, carefully avoiding any personal remarks.
Samaira seemed to relax even further, her responses becoming more engaged, her smile more genuine. He sensed a flicker of gratitude in her eyes, a silent acknowledgment of his unspoken understanding.
As they stood to say goodbye, Saaransh took Samaira's hand, his touch firm but gentle. "It was a pleasure meeting you, Ms. Birla," he said, his voice sincere. "I look forward to working with you in the future."
"Likewise, Mr. Singhania," she replied, her eyes meeting his for a fleeting moment. "I appreciate your... understanding."
He knew what she meant. He had seen the truth in her eyes, the discomfort she felt about the proposed alliance. And he had chosen to respect her feelings, even if it meant sacrificing his own desires.
As Samaira walked out of the boardroom, Saaransh felt a strange mix of disappointment and relief. He had been smitten with her, drawn to her like a moth to a flame. But he knew, deep down, that he had made the right decision.
He wouldn't pursue a relationship with someone who was already in love with another. He would wait for a love that was freely given, a love that was built on mutual respect and genuine affection. And he knew, with unwavering certainty, that that kind of love was worth waiting for.
He also knew, with a growing sense of respect, that Samaira Birla was a woman of strong convictions, a woman who deserved to be with the man she loved. And he hoped, for her sake, that she would find a way to be with him, regardless of the expectations placed upon her. He admired her intelligence, her sharp, independent mind and he knew she deserved happiness.
